Rainbow Bridge A

Davos, a 17 year-old Dutch Warmblood with a stifle injury.
Davos
DaVinci, whose barn name is Davos, was a masterpiece in the hunter ring. Throughout his career, he took home many championships and photographs worthy of a Hollywood Star. This 17 year-old Dutch Warmblood sustained a stifle injury at a horse show. Orthoscopic surgery was performed in the summer of 2002; however, the injury was career ending. While Davos is not ridden anymore, he enjoys being the pasture boss for a group of retired show horses. He drags his leg but is still able to gallop with his pals. For the last five years, this handsome horse has been on prescription bute therapy - 1 gram drench in his morning feed. During the warmer months, his bute is cycled to 5 days on 2 days off to rest his stomach. Because Davos is a geriatric and his bute therapy has been so long-term, his owner opts to supplement his diet with an antacid, Neigh-Lox (with a prescription), which comes in his SmartPak. Let's Ask An Expert: How long can a horse be on bute therapy without harmful side effects?
